Media daily, the only regional specialized portal for the media and telecom industry, starting tomorrow, November 1, 2022, begins with the fifth independent selection of the best and most professional news portals in six countries (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia), this year with slightly modified rules.

Tomorrow we will announce which 20 portals have been pre-selected and whose work will be evaluated by a distinguished international jury. The news portals will also receive some points from readers.

Dr. sci. Lejla Turčilo, Sarajevo – Bosnia and  Herzegovina


  • Dr. sci. Lejla Turčilo,  a full-time professor at the Department of Communication/Journalism, Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Sarajevo, was born in 1977 in Sarajevo, where she completed primary and secondary school. She received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and doctorate from the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo (with the subject of her doctoral dissertation, Media Ownership as a Form of Political Power: Reflections of Global Corporate Media in Bosnia and Herzegovina). She received professional training at the University of Oxford, UK (Annenberg-Oxford Media Summer Institute) and through the International Visitors Program of the Government of the United States of America, and was an International Fellow of the Government of Great Britain. She teaches the subjects of Media Theory, TV Journalism, and Online Journalism at a bachelor’s degree, Media and Politics at a master’s degree, and the subject Shaping of New Publics and PR at a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo. At the Faculty of Islamic Sciences of the University of Sarajevo, she teaches the subject of Contemporary Communication in the master’s study. She is the head of the Lifelong Learning Center of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo and the head of the Department of Communication / Journalism of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo. She was also the vice dean for teaching at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Sarajevo. She has published more than thirty scientific and professional papers and several books in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, France, Belgium, Germany, the USA, and Colombia.

Marijan Jurenec, Ljubljana – Slovenia


Marijan Jurenec started his career in 1994, and already in 1995, he became the co-founder of the most successful private TV station in Slovenia, POP TV, whose director he was until 2009 when it was taken over by CME. In 1998, he launched 24ur, which soon became the strongest portal, and in 2000, he took over another private station: Kanal A. Those three media became the most profitable group within the CME corporation. In 2005, he took over the position of director of Croatian Nova TV and brought it from the position of the fourth most-watched TV channel to a leadership position. At the same time, he developed new media in six countries of the region as a senior vice president at CME until 2009. He initiated and managed his own projects such as ContentExchange, which networks 200 European media portals.

 

Orce Kostov, Veles –  North Macedonia


Orce Kostov was born in 1982 in Veles, North Macedonia. He has been engaged in journalism since 2002, studying journalism at the Faculty of Law in Skopje. From 2002 to 2017, he worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper VEST. He also cooperates with Media Daily and is currently a journalist for the Macedonian Media Servis digital newsroom.


dr. Milica Slijepčević, Belgrade- Serbia


Dr. Milica Slijepčević since 2015, assistant professor at the Faculty of Management, Business and Marketing module and at the Faculty of Digital Arts, Fashion Design module, Metropolitan University in Belgrade. She teaches integrated marketing communications, strategic marketing, fashion marketing, and human resource management. She participated in numerous projects, the most recent of which is the retraining program for Java programmers, as a member of the teaching team of the Metropolitan University, in the field of soft skills (UNDP and the Government of the Republic of Serbia). She is the author of numerous professional and scientific works in the field of fashion marketing, neuromarketing, corporate communications, and human resources. She has many years of experience in the economy and in the NGO sector. She is a member of the Court of Honor of the Serbian Society for Public Relations.


prof.dr.sc Mato Brautović, Dubrovnik – Croatia


Dr. Mato Brautović is a full professor at the Department of Communication at the University of Dubrovnik. During the academic year 2009/2010. he received professional training at the College of Journalism and Communication University of Florida and The Poynter Institute from the USA as part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar program. He gave guest lectures at a large number of world universities, including the University of Florida (USA), Mississippi State University (USA), Missouri State University (USA), and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (USA), Linnaeus University (Sweden), Leeds Metropolitan University (Great Britain), European University Institute (Italy), etc. He taught courses in new media, media convergence, online journalism, public relations, media and national security, and Ph.D. at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Dubrovnik, University of Zagreb, University of Split, University of Montenegro, University of Florida and Linnaeus University. He is the author of several books on online journalism.


Saša Paparella, Zagreb – Croatia


Saša Paparella was born in 1969 in Zagreb and graduated in political science. From 1992 to 1999, he worked in the Zagreb correspondence office of Slobodna Dalmacija. After that, he was a foreign policy editor in the daily Republika (2000), editor in the weekly Nacional (2000-2002), a reporter in the Poslovni dnevnik (2002-2005), and a reporter and investigative journalist in the daily Business. hr (2005-2009) and in Poslovni dnevnik (2009-2020). He is now a freelance journalist. He participated in the projects of the documentary films Gazda and Gazda-početak, directed by Darijo Juričan. In the weekly Forum in July 2012, he published an article entitled ‘State friend no. 1’, the most complete presentation of the career of the leading Croatian entrepreneur Ivica Todorić (Agrokor). Based on that text, in 2016, the Croatian Center for Investigative Journalism and Media Freedom (HRCIN) published his book Gazda, which went through three editions. He also published the book Gazda: Početak, about Miroslav Kutla.


Olivera Sašek Radulović, Niš – Serbia


Olivera Sašek Radulović graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš. She started her journalistic career in 1986 at Narodni novine in Niš. Then she worked at NTV Niš in several positions, going from video editing to journalistic assignments to culture editor. She also worked as a correspondent for RTS. She collaborated with several portals (Novinari online, Istinomer, Media daily) and was the assistant editor-in-chief at the Niške vesti portal and the editor-in-chief of the Srbijavesti.rs portal. Awarded multiple times for editing various films and documentary shows. Producer of the series Guide to Niš for beginners.


Neven Šantić, Rijeka – Croatia (president of the jury)


Neven Šantić before coming to the position of editor-in-chief of the Media Daily portal and worked in all types of media. He started at Radio Rijeka and then worked for more than twenty years as a journalist, commentator, and columnist in Novi List. He was deputy and assistant editor-in-chief there for a while, never stopping writing, and in the early 2000s, he launched the first feature in Croatian journalism that dealt with European integration. From 2012 to 2016, he was the director of the regional television channel Kanal Ri, especially insisting on the synergy of television, portals, and social networks, and then, for a while, he was an independent media and political consultant. He is the winner of several journalistic awards and the author or co-author of several books.


RULES ON THE SELECTION AND WORK OF THE EXPERT JURY FOR THE SELECTION OF THE BEST REGIONAL NEWS PORTAL 2022

Media daily, a regional portal specialized in media (www.mediadaily.biz) organizes and conducts the 5th regional selection for the best news portal in 2022 according to the rules stated below;

  1. The list of 20 nominated portals – which are the subject of evaluation – can be found on the mediadaily.biz portal in the survey section (as of November 1, 2022).
  2. All nominated portals are monitored in the period from 01.11. until 30.11.2022. years.
  3. The selection of the best portal is done through a survey on the portal (30% of points) and the selection of an expert jury (70% of points). The organizer guarantees the implementation of the Election in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards and completely transparently and equally for all portals.
  4. The jury consists of 8 members. Each member of the jury independently, objectively, and independently judges the quality and makes his own decision on the evaluation of the work for each of the 20 nominated portals. The composition of the jury and their biographies and references are publicly available on the mediadaily.biz portal.
  5. None of the provisions of this Ordinance can be interpreted in such a way as to limit the right of each member of the jury to make his decision in accordance with the provision under serial number 4.
  6. The members of the jury are obliged to make their evaluations on a supranational, supra-party basis and in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards.
  7. The members of the jury must not allow their assessment of the work of the portal to be influenced in any way by the representatives of the nominated portals, and they are obliged to terminate and remove any such contact.
  8. Nominated portals and their representatives are prohibited from communicating with jury members during the election. Contact with the editorial office of the organizer is allowed.
    Each member of the jury is obliged to visit each of the nominated portals several times during the specified period and actively monitor their work.
  9. The organizer of the election can provide each member of the jury with publicly available information about the previous work of the portal for the year 2022 by those entities that are competent and authorized for this in certain countries in relation to maintaining professional and ethical standards. The members of the jury will consider and evaluate the given data.
  10.   11. Each member of the jury keeps his notes and observations and must enter them in the provided table, which he will submit to the president of the jury upon completion of the evaluation.
  12. Each member of the jury documents his/her IMPORTANT observation or remark/commendation of a particular portal with a screenshot of the screen, which he/she sends to the jury members’ email group.
  13. Jury members may or may not communicate with each other in a common group of emails on a DAILY basis that will be delivered to everyone by the election organizers.
  14. In order to facilitate the work of all jury members in the group, jury members MUST exchange their observations and remarks twice during the election, on 12.11. and 23.11. This communication serves to overcome the problem of letters and language barriers and possible misunderstanding of the issue, so members who are domiciled in a particular country can help other members of the jury to better understand these problems or circumstances.
  15. Each member of the jury evaluates three categories of the work of each portal and assigns it a score from 1 to 10 for each category. It is only possible to give a rounded score (so 1,2,5,6, not 7.5, 9.5, etc.)
  16. The categories are:

a) Originality and innovation of the writing style and the method of photo/video equipment on the portal;

b) Visual appearance of the portal and user-friendliness and

c) Adherence to professional and ethical journalistic codes.

17. The final evaluation is done between 01.12. and 4.12. and the member of the jury submits his final evaluations and observations to the president of the jury in that period, and no later than December 5, 2022.

18. The average rating of an individual portal is calculated by summing the ratings of all three categories, which is then divided by the number 3 and rounded to two decimal places.

19. The average score of all jury members is obtained by summing all average scores of individual jury members divided by the number 8 and rounded to two decimal places.

20. The best-ranked portal according to the jury’s average scores after that gets 28 points, the second best 26, the third best 24, and so on up to 9th place, two points less. From 10th to 20th place, one point is given downwards, which makes a total of 70% of possible points.

21. Portals get the other 30% of points through a survey in the specified period EXCLUSIVELY on the mediadaily.biz portal in the Survey section. Voting starts on 01.11. at 7 a.m. and ends on 30.11. at 23.59

22. The question in the survey reads: WHICH NEWS PORTAL DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST IN THE REGION?

23. Nominated portals have the right and possibility to invite readers on their portals to vote for them in a poll exclusively on the mediadaily.biz portal in accordance with their business decisions. One reader has one vote and it is not possible to cast more than one vote.

24. The first place in the survey brings 12 points, the second 11 points, the third 10 points and so on up to 1 point. Portals that take positions from 13 to 20 according to readers’ polls receive zero points.

25. In total, it is possible to win a maximum of 40 points – 12 from the readers’ votes and 28 from the jury. It is therefore possible to win at least 1 point (0 from the reader and 1 from the jury).

26. The winner is the portal that scores the most points according to these two criteria.

27. In the event of an equal number of points obtained by the sum of the jury’s points and the sum of the audience’s points, the priority on the list is given to the portal that has more points from the jury.

28. In the case from point 27, when there is a case of an equal number of points by the jury for two or more portals, the portal that was rated better by the president of the jury is ranked better.

29. In the case referred to in point 28, the president of the jury assigns a + mark (one or more) to the better-ranked portal in order to position it higher in the final ranking list.

30. The president of the jury will compile a final report from the submitted observations of the jury members, which will be published when the winner of this election is announced in a shortened version.

31. The decision on the winner of this election will be announced on December 9, 2022. at 12 noon on the mediadaily.biz portal.

32. The winner receives as a gift a special sculpture and a written certificate-plaque NO.1 WINNER 2022 and the right to publish a special digital medal on his portal and during public announcements and communications.

33. The runner-up receives as a gift a special sculpture and a written certificate-plaque NO.2 – 2022, as well as the right to publish a special digital medal on its portal and during public announcements and communications.

34. The third-placed portal receives as a gift a special sculpture and a written certificate-plaque NO.3 – 2022, as well as the right to publish a special digital medal on its portal and during public announcements and communications.

35. Other portals receive as a gift a written certificate plaque in accordance with the position on the ranking list: TOP 20-2022, TOP 10-2022, TOP 5-2022, and the right to publish a special digital medal on their portal and during public announcements and communication.

36. These rules are published on 31.10. 2022 on the mediadaily.biz portal.
