Exclusively and unofficially, we found out when the Agency for Protection of the competition of the Republic of Slovenia will decide whether the United Group can take over Pro Plus, the largest television company based on marketing revenues in this area, which includes Kanal A and Pop TV.
The most recent media take over in the region is on the rise, which we have been writing about on several occasions. United Group was planning to take over the Slovenian Pro Plus and Croatian Nova TV for EUR 230 million. As is known, after the Croatian regulator allowed the takeover, the United group managed to take it from CME’s Nova TV on 1 st of August, although this change was not yet officially visible in the Croatian Court Registry until the writing of this article.
Our exclusive source, close to the Competition Protection agency, in whose hands is the decision to take over Pro Plus, claims that the decision will not be made before the end of this year with a big question whether it will be made then. Previously in Slovenian media, it was announced that the decision would be made during the September, which from our source of information will not happen.
One of the reasons why the decision will not be announced during September, according to our source, because there are announced changes in the ownership structure of the United Group. Its majority owner is the US KKR Fund which is in the phase of selling the United Group and in negotiations with more potential customers. This was great news for the Slovenian regulator, which, due to the complexity of the case and the various pressures it has been exposed and postponed for more than a year.
In the Slovenian political circles, they are not thrilled with the ability of possible take over of the largest commercial television by a customer who controls the same and third-largest telecom operators due to possible negative synergistic effects on the advertising and telecom market. Our informant even claims that it is almost certain, as things stand now, the decision will be negative for the United group, which will not allow the take over of Pro Plus. Pro Plus has a dominant role in the television advertising market in Slovenia and holds more than 60 percent of the market.
